It’s not much of a stretch to say James Franco is every parent’s worst nightmare. Could you imagine your kid — hypothetical or actual — dating the self-proclaimed artist occasionally known as Semaj? That’s the gist of Why Him?, in which Franco plays an obnoxious, foul-mouthed, tattooed billionaire dating the daughter of Bryan Cranston’s doting dad. He’s not technically playing himself, but it’s a pretty believable nightmare scenario.

You can watch new red and green band trailers for the new comedy, but the former (above) is infinitely more effective than the latter, particularly since so much of the humor is mined from Franco’s inappropriate language. The green band trailer (below) doesn’t have the same effect:

Directed by John Hamburg (the great I Love You, Man), Why Him? stars Cranston as a dad who goes to visit his daughter (Zoey Deutch) for the holidays only to discover that she’s shacked up with this D-bag who’s set on proposing to her on Christmas morning. They’re joined by a fantastic supporting cast, including the incomparably hilarious Megan Mullally as the mom.

Since Breaking Bad ended, Cranston has been clinging to prestige roles, which might make you forget just how funny he can be with the right material. Hopefully Why Him? is just that. Here’s the official synopsis:

Over the holidays, Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad and his family visit his daughter at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). The straight-laced Ned thinks Laird, who has absolutely no filter, is a wildly inappropriate match for his daughter. The one-sided rivalry-and Ned’s panic level-escalate when he finds himself increasingly out of step in the glamorous high-tech hub, and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.

Why Him? also stars Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells, Casey Wilson and Adam DeVine, and hits theaters on December 25.
