University of Montana's Vibrant Annual Powwow Back for 2022

The U of M Native American Student Association will host their 53rd annual Kyiyo Pow Wow celebration on April 23rd and 24th at the Adams Center. This year's Kyiyo is very anticipated as the last couple of years the celebration was either canceled or held virtually. All are invited to participate in person this year for vibrant dancing, singing, sharing of stories, and meaningful traditions. Kyiyo student leaders describe the celebration this way.

The celebration is a time to preserve the rich heritage of Native Americans and renew the thoughts of the old traditions. The diversity of each tribe represented at our Pow Wow is shown within the dancing styles and traditional dress of the dancers. Although from a wide array of backgrounds, each dancer comes together to celebrate what their culture truly represents.

The Pow Wow is open to the public and will include traditional dancing & drumming, along with food & art vendors. The 53rd annual Kyiyo Pow Wow starts Friday, April 23rd with Grand Entry at 7 p.m., and continues Saturday the 24th, with Grand Entry at noon and 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per session, or $12 for a weekend pass. Kids 6 & under and elders 65 & over are free. Tickets will be available at the door.

Kyiyo not only brings people together and keeps traditions alive, but it is also a fundraiser for the U of M Native American Student Association. If you have questions or would like to volunteer, email kyiyo@umontana.edu

Fun Fact: "kyiyo" translates to "bear" in the traditional Blackfoot language.
