Just over a year ago, Bozeman and Missoula, along with hundreds of other cities, were jumping at the opportunity to have a SUPER fast Internet connection thanks to Google. All that went down the tubes this week after Google picked Kansas City for the pilot fiber optic project. Bozeman and Missoula were among dozens of cities that were hoping to bring Google to town. The project would give access to one of the fastest connections in the world, an amazing one gigabit per second - roughly 100 times faster than the current speed in the average home or business. Local supporters of the plan rallied last March and local business and even government leaders made their appeals, touting the University of Montana as one of the selling points.

What's important now for places like Bozeman, Missoula and other cities is what will happen to actually speed up local broadband through other alternatives available and only time will tell.
