It is with sadness that we wrap up the week going into Easter weekend with such tragic news.

Our hearts go out to the friends and family members of this gentleman, who was probably doing something he loved, trying to bring in a few more fish before the season ended. Unfortunately, the conditions must have become a bit too precarious with the warmer temperatures much of Montana has been experiencing this week.

From the desk of Sheriff Darren Short, a report that the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office received a call earlier this week about ice fishing gear sitting on the ice near a large hole on Lower Thompson Lake, south of Libby, Montana. Several citizens had reported seeing someone ice fishing at that location earlier in the morning. It was determined that a person had possibly fallen through the ice.

Rescuers from Fisher River Valley Fire and Rescue were dispatched along with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and David Thompson Search and Rescue. Rescuers arrived and were able to approach the area using ice rescue equipment. Sadly, they found what rescuers never want to find.

Rescuers were able to locate a man in the lake. They were able to remove him from the water, but he was unfortunately already deceased.

The victim was later identified as 71-year-old Michael Larson of Missoula. Notifications were made by the Lincoln County Coroner.

Again, our condolences go out to all family and friends of Mr. Larson.
