It's NOT what you think...

Whenever I tell people I’m going to Las Vegas for the weekend…I see their eyes light up like a kid in a candy store. Vegas is different for me than it is for the average person. Living there for three years, I don’t do ‘The Strip,’ gamble away my weekly earnings or drink my liver under the table when I go. Vegas is my ‘home.’  (I now consider Missoula my home.)

I’m considered a local there…I don’t need a map to get around the city, nor do I have to pay the outrages prices to see the latest show, or buy a bottle of hairspray. I know the inside tips and tricks to do Vegas on a dime.

After picking up my rental car, I did my normal rounds, visiting friends, hitting my favorite stores and stopping off to get my favorite treats that aren’t offered in Zootown. Before heading to my friends' house for dinner, I decided I needed a lil pick me up from my long day of travel.

I stopped into a Starbucks. As I was waiting for my venti iced coffee with skim milk and 2 Splendas, I heard a lady scream. A man had run into the coffee shop, grabbed a lady’s iPhone and bolted out the door. Other patrons tried to race after him… but it was too late. He got away with her phone…for now.

The woman wasn’t doing anything wrong when this happened less than five feet away from me. The new mom was sitting at a small table, her 3-month-old baby strapped onto her in a front pack. Her iPhone lying next to her laptop as she sipped her mocha frappe.

It literally happened in a blink of an eye...

And you know what I thought… Are you kidding me?! How ballsy/hard up do you have to be to steal something off a table, in daylight…in the middle of a crowded store…inches away from its owner?!

The next thing that crossed my mind… This would NEVER happen in Missoula…and that made me smile…and think how thankful I am that I live in a place where I can ask my fellow coffee connoisseur to watch my computer while I run to the bathroom. It's just that kind of small town kinship that keeps people here. That and everyone knows everyone else.
