Missoula County Public Schools has approved the sale of two parcels of land near Sentinel High School. MCPS Superintendent Mark Thane says the property up for sale is referred to as the Homevale property.

“The school district made a determination a few weeks ago that the site is not suitable and is not likely to be used as a school site in the future,” Thane said. “That determination was likely because we have significant property directly across the street with Sentinel, the business building, and the former Missoula College location.”

According to Thane, a significant amount of revenue from the Homevale sale will go toward renovating the old Missoula College site on South Avenue.

“We have that property holding,” Thane said. “We are looking to move our business and administrative functions all into those facilities. Before we do so, we need to do some upgrades to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing. We need to abate asbestos and do some remodeling.”

After a group proposed purchase of the property, MCPS had a real estate consultant look at it and establish what a range of value would be.

“It was determined that the range would be somewhere between 11 and 13 dollars per square foot,” Thane said. “We received an offer that falls within that range. The board has approved negotiating a buy-sell agreement with that party. The buy-sell needs to come before the board for a final approval and at that point, the property will sell.”

Thane says they will work in the next couple of weeks to get the sale finalized.
