According to the National Weather Service, 220 million Americans will be dealing with temperatures below freezing this week - that's 75% of the population of the continental U.S.! And a lot of places will experience the lowest temperatures they've had in decades, especially in the Midwest and Northeast, where it could feel like it's 50 degrees below zero with the wind chill.

Meanwhile in Missoula, we're getting our cars washed and rolling around with our windows down during the month that is typically our coldest. Although we've been enjoying a couple of days of sunshine, we have experienced winter days that were nearly minus 30 degrees. And you know with those types of temps in Montana, it comes with a wind chill that makes it feel like minus 60 degrees, making it downright dangerous.

Our coldest day on record is Christmas eve of 1983 when it was -29.9.  You probably didn't notice as you were too busy praying to find a Cabbage Patch Kid or Synchronicity on cassette under the tree. The last time we got anywhere near that cold in Missoula was on Groundhog Day in 1996 when it was -26.

Missoula's warmest day on record? Easy to remember, it was 107 degrees on 7/7/07.
