Just like ever other hardcore Transformers fan in America, I too stayed up way too late last night to be one of the first to see the latest installment of the series at our local Carmike 10 cinemas. I honestly wish I used those hours to sleep instead..

The first Transformers was, for the most part, every fan boys dream.  The second in the trilogy was a slap in the face to anyone who paid money to see it. The third, Transformers: Dark Of The Moon was built as an apology to make up for the previous 2008 insult. Sorry, especially in this case, is not enough.

If only this movie was about robots, and only robots. Wasn't that what the old cartoons were based on? If memory serves, occasionally there would be a human or two to advance the plot line of  the classic animated series along but in this live action 3D film I seriously groaned whenever the focus was taken off the machines. The interaction between the actors was just plain awful and over the top. Shia LeBeouf screams and cries for Bumblebee or Optimus yet again (only louder), John Turturro takes his character to new annoying levels only to be overshadowed by an even more irritating John Malcovich (which I'm still trying to figure out what his purpose in the movie was).

Director Michael Bay admitted that the second installment lacked plot, and while the story this time may be a bit more comprehensible that doesn't necessarily mean it made the movie any more enjoyable. Granted, I was up way past my bed time for this showing but it just got to the point where I stopped caring where the story was going.  Give me robots smashing robots, that's what I paid for!

The only thing that barely justified my lack of sleep this morning was the final 40 minutes where the Decepticons unleash their evil plan upon the citizens of Chicago. The final battle sequences were some of the most amazing action sequences I've ever seen on film, but I had to power through nearly 2 hours into this 147 minute film before the finale even took place. The CGI was top notch and the 3D was admittedly better than "Avatar", which is quite a feat in itself. But was it worth $13?  In my sleep deprived opinion... no, sorry to say.
