League of Women Voters to Host National Voter Registration Day

The League of Women Voters Montana will be recognizing National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday with tables set up at the Missoula Food Bank.

League of Women Voters local President Nancy Leifer provides details.

“We are participating in a national wide effort called National Voter Registration Day,” said Leifer. “It's a way to draw attention to the idea that everybody who is a citizen and is eligible to vote needs to register, and maybe we can help get more people registered if we kind of focus on one special day to draw attention to the need to get people registered if you're not registered, already.”

Leifer said the COVID 19 pandemic has kept people from registering to vote for the upcoming general election.

“The big problem we're facing this year is that voter registrations normally progress at a certain rate every month, in that people just go as a natural course to register,” she said. “But because of the pandemic, we have noticed nationally and everywhere that that normal flow of work is not happening.”

Leifer said there is a large number of people who have been waiting for a secure method to register to vote, and the League of Women Voters is a trusted organization nationwide.

“There are even more people out there who for whatever reasons would have tried to go into register to vote over the last six months,” she said. “That's why this particular year is even more important than ever before. To offer people the opportunity, here's a safe place, you can come and you can register to vote. You can change your address, you can request an absentee ballot, and we will have all of that information and all the forms available at this event.”

The event is being held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the Missoula Food Bank at 1700 Wyoming Street. There will be volunteers available to assist those who need help to register.
