‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6 Covers Highlight the Women of Westeros
Game of Thrones has been less than kind to even the strongest of female characters over the years, and if a new report is to be believed, Season 6 might finally see the women of Westeros come out ahead. New Entertainment Weekly covers reveal the six major heroines of the new season, some looking far better off than we last left them.
It’d be easy to look at Entertainment Weekly’s six new covers, featuring Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), Cersei (Lena Headey), Arya (Maisie Williams), Sansa (Sophie Turner), Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) and Margaery (Natalie Dormer) and mistake them for Season 5 images. The costuming need not reflect their current situations (save Cersei’s short hair), while HBO said of the women this year:
The women are rocking this season — and I’m not just saying that because they’re on [the] cover. Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) always does, but also Brienne (Gwendoline Christie), Arya (Maisie Williams), Sansa (Sophie Turner), Cersei (Lena Headey), Margaery (Natalie Dormer), and other characters too, like Yara (Gemma Whelan). They power this season. It’s organic to the storytelling, yet a radical shift. It’s the women that are the hope that we’re watching as the chess pieces move this season, and it’s very exciting.
Elsewhere of Game of Thrones Season 6, soon to be renewed for Seasons 7 and 8, screen legend Max von Sydow has been cast as the mysterious Three-Eyed Raven to a returning Bran, while Deadwood alum Ian McShane will also appear in a limited, mysterious role, joining Richard E. Grant and The Babadook star Essie Davis as theatre troup players, four notable actors as the Tarly family, Melanie Liburd as a new Red Priestess, and Borgen star Pilou Asbæk as fan-favorite Euron Greyjoy. Apart from a list of directors, Of Monsters and Men will put in a cameo, and story logistics seemingly confirm scenes set at The Wall.
