On April 9, 2022, at approximately 8:44 p.m., a Missoula Police Department Officer was dispatched to a reported trespasser at the Walmart located in the 4000 block of Hwy 93 South. The complainant advised that 32-year-old Jolanda Brown was currently in the ladies apparel section and had previously been trespassed from all Walmart locations. While enroute to Walmart, an officer learned that Brown had an active warrant of arrest out. Police Public Information Officer Lydia Arnold explains.

“Officers responded to Walmart for a report of trespassing of a female, Jolanda Brown,” Arnold said. “Brown had been previously trespassed from all Walmart properties and was currently on location. Officers observed indicators of criminal dangerous drug use and paraphernalia on Brown’s person when they made contact with her. Brown was taken into custody.”

The officer conducted a search incident to arrest and found a chewed-up straw on Brown’s person that the officer recognized as an implement for ingesting drugs, otherwise known as a “tooter straw.” Brown told the officer that the straw was unused.

The officer contacted the on-call probation officer, who requested that the officer search Brown’s bag and her vehicle. As the officer approached Brown’s vehicle, Brown  made an unsolicited comment that the vehicle had “blue mexis” inside. The officer knows that certain versions of fentanyl pills are referred to as “blue mexis.”

“Based on Brown being on probation, Probation and Parole became involved in the incident,” Arnold said. “A search was conducted and based on preliminary investigation, pills that were presumptive positive for fentanyl were located. This case is still being investigated by the Missoula Police Department.”

Brown was advised of her Miranda rights and agreed to speak with the officer. Brown stated that her boyfriend and her friend, the registered owner of the vehicle, had acquired “a bunch” of blue mexis recently. Brown further explained that she saw approximately 30 fentanyl pills inside the vehicle that morning.

Brown was transported to the Missoula County Detention Facility. According to court documents, while the jail staff was performing their booking search, they discovered what appeared to be two fentanyl pills that had fallen out from between Brown’s buttocks.

Brown is currently being charged with felony criminal possession of dangerous drugs, criminal trespass to property, and criminal possession of drug paraphernalia.
