Crash on Glacier Park Going to Sun Highway Snarls Traffic

It must have been a long, trying day for vacationers and rangers alike on Glacier National Park's Going-to-the-Sun Road on Monday.

Traffic was delayed nearly three hours late yesterday afternoon, as park officials responded to a report of a vehicle 40 feet down an embankment near Packer's Roost, several miles below the Loop.  The vehicle had swerved to avoid hitting another car that had stopped in the roadway to view a bear.

Park rangers had to perform a technical rescue of the three occupants of the vehicle that went off the road. All were transported to a local hospital and fortunately all are reported in stable condition. A number of trees had to be cut down so a tow truck could reach the vehicle.

During this incident, park officials also had to respond to a visitor suffering an open ankle fracture falling off a horse. There were also reports of an infant locked in a car, two missing parties, a bear struck by a car on Highway 2, a DUI arrest in Many Glacier and an abandoned dog at Logan Pass visitor center.

Just another day at the height of tourist season, right?
