Another area of Montana has reported Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) infection of deer, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. A sample from a white-tailed deer during the recent general hunting season has tested positive for CWD in the Ruby Valley, about a mile west of Sheridan, southeast of Butte. The report was one of 24 recent samples that showed CWD and this was the first in Hunting District 322. The positive result was reported by the Colorado State University laboratory. Hunters who submitted animals for testing can see their results at fwp.mt.gov/CWD.

Greg Lemon of Montana FWP reported that over 7,000 animals have been sampled and 115 have tested positive for CWD including northwest, northeast, southeast and southwest Montana. He said CWD cannot be eradicated once it infects a herd. The department will make plans for the next step in managing the disease, which affects the nervous system of elk, deer and moose. Established CWD Management Zones continue to report infected animals. Chronic Wasting Disease was first detected in the state south of Billings in 2017. The FWP website has more information.
