Missoula Police Detective Sergeant Travis Welsh sent out an email Friday afternoon announcing that a sexual assault victim asked to have a recent case discontinued.

The complainant/victim of the sexual assault that took place in Miller Hall on the UM campus has contacted the Missoula Police Department and informed the assigned detective of her request to discontinue the investigation of her complaint.  She has been provided information regarding resources available to her in the community, and informed that should she change her mind, the case would be re-opened.

No reason was provided by the victim for asking police to drop the investigation. The University of Montana and the city of Missoula has received national attention over the issue of sexual assaults. On May 1, the United States Attorney General’s Office of Civil Rights announced their intention to look into how Missoula and campus authorities have been handling the problem.
