True Detective anticipation evaporated practically overnight with the release of Season 2, and nearly one year removed from its finale, HBO is increasingly less keen on re-lighting that e-cigarette. Following a network changing of the guard, creator Nic Pizzolatto is even less likely to develop any True Detective Season 3, instead focusing on other projects.

Take this with a grain of salt for the moment, as we’ve heard in the past that HBO thought to keep True Detective on ice, rather than make any declarative end, but a Hollywood Reporter profile of new network head Casey Bloys dropped an intriguing tidbit on the future of True Detective, or at least creator Nic Pizzolatto’s involvement with it:

While juggernaut Game of Thrones and the final season of Damon Lindelof’s Peabody-winning drama The Leftovers shouldn’t require too much of Bloys’ time, other decisions, including the fate of True Detective, now fall to him. (HBO sources suggest a new project from creator Nic Pizzolatto is more likely.)

That would certainly make sense, as Pizzolatto has yet to engage with press in any significant way toward the second season, and wouldn’t jump back into the franchise without a confident new direction. Pizzolatto maintains a development deal at HBO that has yet to publicly bear fruit, and it remains to be seen if Bloys would consider additional talent to helm future True Detective seasons, with or without Pizzolatto’s direct involvement.

Either way, it certainly seems as if a new day is dawning at HBO, one focused on re-energizing the brand after its recent defeats. A third season of True Detective seems like a risky prospect in that light, but is Pizzolatto’s tenure officially two-and-done?
