Say what you will about their inability to limit episode orders, but Netflix knows just how to keep a buzz going. Long before Stranger Things made fans beg for a second season, and even before its premiere, Netflix had apparently already placed a stealth order for Season 2.

Following a July release, it wasn’t until August that Netflix finally confirmed Stranger Things Season 2 in the works for 2017. Co-creators the Duffer brothers sing a different tune in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, however, claiming  that a second order was greenlit before the series bowed in the first place:

Matt: They greenlit the second season before we even premiered. So when everyone was going, “Is there going to be a second season?” we had been writing the entire time. So we’ve been working on this almost all summer.

Ross: It drove me crazy. “Please, can’t we just tell everyone we’re doing a second season?”

Matt: Netflix has its mysterious ways, but it actually ended up working because it had built up to this fever pitch. I guess that’s what they were intending to do all the time.

Elsewhere of Stranger Things Season 2, we know shooting will take place in Atlanta from roughly October to April for a 2017 premiere. The story will pick up in the fall of 1984, while creators Matt and Ross Duffer have teased a James Cameron sequel influence in crafting the second chapter. We’ll also learn more about the Demogorgon and Upside Down, as teased in our exclusive concept art piece.

Casting presumably continues, but what other dirty tricks might Netflix pull on the road to Stranger Things Season 2?
