Too much typing, too little action. We can sit here online and get all riled up behind our keyboards, composing a mile a minute about our feelings concerning drunk driving in Montana, thinking "hey, I'm doing something" but the truth is, the whole online warrior tactic hasn't changed a thing.

No one can deny that drunk driving has been on the rise in Missoula. Deaths are reported nearly every weekend resulting from intoxication and it's obvious that our failed attempts at raising awareness with social media is not making the issue any better. The longer we type up status updates and refresh to see if anyone pressed "like" the more people we will end up seeing in coffins. Sorry to be grim, but frankly this issue has become too large to ignore and candy coat.

Now is the time to act. And it seems that people in Missoula are starting to rally yet again towards bringing like minded people together and host a meeting of the minds. Yes, it's been done before. Town Hall meetings and churches do this all the time. But we need to keep trying. And hopefully this message will get out to the people in our listening and reading audience who've never been to one of these events before. Perhaps you have a story to share? Or maybe you hold the key to solving this problem?

So, let's do this. No more Facebook comments complaining, no more griping on local news blogs. Get up, turn off the computer, and join people face-to-face to solve one of the biggest issues plaguing our community. Here's how:

According to Jacquie Buchman from the Lucky Strike Casino:

The first meeting for Teenage Drinking Awareness will be Wednesday March 14th at 7 pm at the Lucky Strike Restaurant Missoula Fairgrounds. Yes, it is attached to a bar; however we will be in the dining room, there will be no waitress as soda will be available for people that want it, I will be bringing some snacking items and if anyone else would like to that is fine as well. I am encouraging you to bring your teenagers so we can hear from them on what they would like to see done.

  • Meeting agenda for the first meeting,
  • Nominating officers,
  • Coming up with a name,
  • Brainstorming

If there are other things that people would like to discuss please bring all your ideas to the table; however we will have nominations first so we can have some order. If you are interested in attending please respond so I roughly know how many people will be attending. Also invite as many people as you want to the meeting the more the merrier. Have a wonderful day and looking forward to seeing everyone Wednesday night.

This just might be the perfect outlet to make some real progress with this alarming issue. If anything, a chance to meet people affected by drunk driving in Missoula and share your experiences, or possibly(hopefully) a solution. So please, log off, if only for a brief moment, and plug into a true human connection so we can hopefully save lives together. Please join Jacquie and her friends this Wednesday, 7pm at The Lucky Strike.
