UPDATE - 2:30 p.m. 12/31/14

The following is a press release from Paige Pavalone with the Missoula County Sheriff's Office on the Wednesday morning officer involved shooting.

At approximately 0200 hours this morning, Missoula City Police officers responded to a domestic incident involving three individuals. The incident evolved into a 20-year-old intoxicated Missoula male leading law enforcement on a pursuit throughout downtown and west Missoula. MPD Officers attempted to stop the suspect in his vehicle in front of Safeway on West Broadway. The suspect fled in a westbound direction at a high rate of speed, leading officers in a pursuit. The vehicle eventually came to a stop at the North Reserve Street onramp. The suspect did have a female inside of the vehicle and was inflicting lethal force upon her. The Missoula City Police Officer fired upon the suspect and he died at the scene. There were no other people that were injured during the incident. Because this was an officer involved shooting, the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office was called into investigate and a civilian coroner from Sander’s County was called into to conduct the death investigation. The investigation of the scene was conducted during early daylight hours by Missoula County Sheriff’s detectives. The scene was cleared and open to through traffic at approximately 1100 hours on this date. More information will be released upon the completion of the investigation.

Pavalone gave more details:

"We can confirm that the deceased is an adult male civilian," Pavalone said. "No officers were injured. Because is was an officer involved shooting, we had to request a civilian coroner from an adjacent county. The Missoula County Sheriff's Office is obviously the local coroner, but because of the officer involved shooting, that changes the circumstances, so a civilian coroner has been requested out of Sanders County."

Pavalone explained why the deceased man's body has been left at the scene.

"He requested that the integrity of the scene be maintained until he arrives here, so the body is still on scene until he arrives to investigat," she said. "At that point, the Missoula County Sheriff's Office can begin their investigation of the officer involved shooting."

One person has been killed in an officer involved shooting in Missoula.

According to Public Information Officer Paige Pavalone with the Missoula County Sheriff's Office, the incident involved a Missoula City Police officer, so the investigation is being handled by the sheriff's office.

"We know that at about 3 this morning there was an officer involved shooting that occurred on West Broadway that involved a Missoula City Police officer, and one individual is deceased," Pavalone said. "We have officers on scene securing the area, and right now we're waiting for daylight so we can do a full assessment and an accurate investigation so no pieces to the puzzle are overlooked. We are on standby right now until we get more daylight."

Neither the gender nor the age of the shooting victim were released. Pavalone said no one else was injured in the fatal shooting incident.
