High-Sir-Sly

This week I went alternative... again!

Back when I lived in Orange County, I remember one of my friends calling me up one night because they had an extra ticket to a show for a 'new badass indie pop band.' Now if you know me at all, then you know that I rarely turn down a live show. So I accepted my friends invitation, changed into a pair of ripped skinny jeans, threw on a concert tee and headed out to some random club in the OC.

The band we saw that night was Sir Sly and I've been a fan ever since!

'High' is their newest single and I almost blew out my speakers the first time I heard it on the radio. Immediately after the song ended, I found it on Spotify and played it three more times...

Like a lot of their previous music, High is pretty dark but still manages to have an upbeat electrifying feel to it. Lyrically, it's a rollercoaster of emotion, taking you through the ups and downs of drug use, withdrawals, insecurities, expectations and finding some sort of self-worth. But half the fun of listening to a new song, is seeing if you connect with it.

Personally I love music that can take you to another place or make you feel emotions that you normally block out. Temptation. Lust. Vulnerability. High does that for me.  I tend to really connect with songs where you can hear the rawness in either the singers voice or their lyrics...

It feels good to be running from the devil
Another breath, and I’m up another level
It feels good to be up above the cloud
It feels good for the first time in a long time now

We're all running from a metaphorical devil. Wether or not it reaches the extremes of addiction or going through withdrawals is up for interpretation. But we all have that one demon we hope never catches up to us...

As far as live performances go, Sir Sly is one of the most talented groups I've seen in a long time. I'm not sure which is more fun to watch, the band or the audience's reaction to the music. Maybe it's a combination of the two and how they create that electrifying atmosphere that you'll come to associate with the trio. I for one know from experience, that all it took was one show for them to lock me in as a fan for life.

Nowadays, alternative music holds its own on many of the Top 40 charts. You're just as likely to see a single from Twenty One Pilots as you are to see one from Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran. So even though Sir Sly isn't a household name yet, their new single High gets them one step closer to hitting that sweet spot!!!

Happy listening...
