An unidentified Missoula man, 45, shot himself at Playfair Park just before a police officer had the opportunity to speak with him.

Missoula Police Department Public Information Director, Detective Sergeant Travis Welsh said the initial call came in from the man's brother, who said the victim was suicidal.

"The officer was eventually able to make phone contact with this male and they conversed. The male agreed to meet with the officer, and as the officer was arriving to actually meet with the man, he produced a handgun and took his own life."

Welsh said the incident took place in Playfair Park near the intersection of Stephens Avenue and Pattee Creek. Following the incident, Welsh said police department personnel secured the area for public safety.

"Anytime we have a report of a gunshot, our primary concern is to render the area safe if possible, and once that is done, then our concerns become medical, in addition to scene security and safety," Welsh said. "In a case like this where there is a suicide, then we would request a response from the sheriff's office and the deputy county coroner, as it was in this case."
