Christopher Clapp, 31, was charged in Missoula Justice Court on Monday, February 10, with felony theft, for allegedly stealing $8,000 from a homeless woman and her children.

According to court documents, the victim had been awarded the money from a lawsuit in 2012, and Clapp, who had been living with the woman, convinced her to let him hold the money, because he was concerned for her safety. Clapp then left with the money, and traveled to a casino in Idaho, where he allegedly lost over $2,900 in gambling.

Clapp was eventually located in Indiana, where was was already serving time for another crime. He was extradited to Montana to face the theft charge.

Deputy Missoula County Attorney Patty Bower asked Judge Karen Orzech for $10,000 bail, and the judge agreed. Clapp must now stay in the Missoula County Jail to face the felony theft charge in Missoula District Court.

It is unknown if the victim ever received her money back from Clapp.
