‘Logan’ Trailer: One Last Stab at Greatness for Hugh Jackman
He’s the best there is at what he does. And what he does is make gritty X-Men spinoff movies.
Hugh Jackman returns, one last time, to the role that made him a star in Logan. Reuniting with James Mangold, who directed The Wolverine and steadied the solo Wolverine franchise after the disaster that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Jackman plays an older, sadder, beardier Logan in a world where mutants have mysteriously vanished. (Maybe it’s not going to be mysterious in the finished movie, but it’s definitely mysterious here.) Along with his old buddy Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Logan must protect a young girl (Dafne Keen) from a bunch of bad guys - even though he’s not quite the invincible killer he used to be.
The trailer didn’t come with an official plot description but it’s pretty easy to gather the broad strokes of what’s going on here, including the fact that Patrick Stewart actually has a fairly substantial role in Logan. This isn’t just a walk-on cameo like, say, Jackman made in X-Men: Apocalypse. (In the press release, Stewart is billed second, behind Jackman and ahead of Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, and Dafne Keen, who plays the little girl that Logan must protect (and sure looks like she could be a movie version of X-23, a female clone of Wolverine who’s become a major character in Marvel Comics over the last few years.) The Wolverine series has gotten progressively darker and more serious with each installment, and this one definitely looks to be the darkest and most serious yet. Except for a couple of shots of Jackman bearing his claws, you might not even recognize him as Wolverine.
Logan opens in theaters on March 3, 2017.
