There’s a moment (spoiler, maybe?) in The Huntsman: Winter’s War, when Sam Claflin’s prince explains that Snow White is absent because staring at the magic mirror too much made her ill (what a diss). We then see a quick shot of Snow White from behind as she agonizes in front of the mirror, though her face remains obscured. If you’ve seen the film, then it’s easy to imagine why Snow White and the Huntsman star Kristen Stewart didn’t feel like reprising her role for the sequel, but she’s happy to spell it out for you, just in case.

Speaking with Variety, Stewart finally addresses the reason why she didn’t return for Winter’s War, the criminally boring sequel to the actually-pretty-solid Snow White and the Huntsman:

I read a few scripts. None of them were good. None of them were greenlight-able. And I had a meeting with Universal about the places where the story could go. Maybe Chris [Hemsworth] was more into it. I actually don’t f—ing know.

Well, at least one of those scripts was somewhat “greenlight-able” to someone at Universal, which surprisingly managed to not only get Charlize Theron to return, but convinced Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain to star in a totally baffling prequel / sequel.

As for that passive-aggressive “Snow White cameo” in Winter’s War, the studio did ask Stewart to make a brief appearance in the film, but she was basically like, “nah”:

The studio did reach out to ask if she would appear in a cameo as Snow White. She told them, “I might just leave that be. I was really into that, but …” she adds with a smirk. “So now I’m like … ‘Thank God.’”

So there you have it. The non-mystery of Stewart’s non-involvement with Winter’s War has been solved. If you’re looking for an excuse for Hemsworth, Theron, et al., you will likely find “money” to be the culprit.
