The original Independence Day wasn’t exactly subtle. It trashed the White House, the Empire State Building, and the Capitol Records Building. It laid waste to huge swaths of the planet, all for the amusement of summer moviegoers. So how do you top that?

I guess you blow up the entire freaking planet.

The trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence is just raw carnage. Whole cities getting demolished. At one point one of the giant alien motherships parks over the Atlantic Ocean and it’s over the entire Atlantic Ocean. So, yeah, if we get an Independence Day 3 it’s just going to be about the termites and cockroaches that are the only things left after these E.T.s wipe the floor with us.

Or maybe not! After all, we have Jeff Goldblum on our side. That’s right aliens! You didn’t count on Roland Emmerich convincing Jeff Goldblum to come back and make a sequel, did you? Well he did! And he beat you once, so he can probably do it again!

Goldblum doesn’t have Will Smith at his side this time, but he does have Jesse Usher playing Smith’s character’s son. And Bill Pullman is back as former President Whitmore, although he looks a little worse for wear. Maika Monroe from the awesome It Follows plays his daughter and Liam Hemsworth plays her fighter pilot boyfriend. The trailer also features glimpses of Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, and Brent Spiner from the original ID4, all back for more alien invading fun as well.

And there is a surprising amount of comedy in this trailer. You’ve got to convince people to come see your movie about the imminent destruction of their entire species somehow. Independence Day: Resurgence opens in theaters on June 24, and not on Independence Day for some reason.
