All our lives we have heard that gold is very valuable. And to win a gold medal in the Olympics means you have done the best you can possibly do in a certain competition. But I have always wondered how much is a gold medal worth in actual dollars. Well, results have actually just been released.

A gold medal is made of 494 grams of silver and only 6 grams of gold, and in total a gold medal is worth $587. In fact, the last time Olympic medals were made with 100% pure gold was back in 1912 during the Summer Games in Stockholm, Sweden.

I hope this doesn't sound too horrible, but for winning a gold medal in the Olympics I thought athletes were getting a bit more than a $587 medal. Although I can imagine standing up at the games and representing your country is probably everything these athletes are working so hard for.
