Missoula police were called to a business on Orange Street Thursday afternoon and arrested a homeless man for sexual assault.

Public Information Officer Travis Welsh said the 9-1-1 call came in at about 5 p.m.

"The first officer arrived in the 900 block of North Orange Street  where he went to the rear of the business and found a 50 year-old homeless man engaged in a sexual assault with a female victim who appeared to be either asleep or unconscious," Welsh said. "The two were separated and after initial interviews at the scene, the male suspect was taken into custody."

The female victim, 51, denied any medical treatment at the scene, and did not complain of any obvious injuries.

Welsh said official charges have not yet been filed, because the first priority was to see to the victim's safety.

"First, we want to make sure we meet the victim's immediate needs, provide advocacy services and any medical needs," he said. "We wouldn't require any victim, male or female, to do anything they weren't ready to do. Any charges against the suspect would be filed, I would imagine, later on this afternoon."
