HBO Hasn’t Read David Milch’s ‘Deadwood’ Movie Script Yet

Deadwood creator David Milch reportedly once had stacks of scripts ready to go for a movie revival of his revered historical drama, but that doesn’t mean HBO has seen one word of them. The network offered an updated on the prospect that while Milch continues working on a script, they’ve not necessarily approved any drafts.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour, HBO boss Casey Bloys offered a brief update on the proceedings, if only to say “David [Milch] is writing the script. We haven't read it. I imagine it will be very good but I'll let you know when I see the script. I feel good about it but I can't tell you for sure.”

Bloys’ predecessor Mike Lombardo had previously spoken to Milch having pitched a general idea, though admittedly one that was subject to change. Series star Ian McShane also seemed to think something might shake out by the end of 2016.

Of course, it’d still be up to Milch to gather the prolific cast (sadly without Ralph Richeson), which in three seasons included McShane, Justified lead Timothy Olyphant, Fear The Walking Dead star Kim Dickens, Jessica Jones alum Robin Weigert, Breaking Bad breakout Anna Gunn, Paula Malcolmson, Molly Parker, and many more. The series also featured early guest spots for Parks and Recreation favorite Nick Offerman (take caution Googling that one), and even a young Kristen Bell.

For those unaware, HBO’s Deadwood ran from 2004 to 2006, showcasing the rise of Deadwood, South Dakota from frontier gold prospecting camp to fully-annexed territory.

Milch’s current HBO work with Shadow Country will take precedence over a Deadwood movie, but could the official greenlight come later this year? Will HBO’s new regime approve?
