‘G.I. Joe 3′ May Re-Enlist Director Jon M. Chu

G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘ was rumored to have a troubled post-production, which made director Jon M. Chu (who at that point was best known for directing ‘Step Up’ sequels and a Justin Bieber documentary) look out of his depth. The film turned out to be a huge success, so it’s not surprising to hear Chu’s the current frontrunner for directing duties on ‘G.I. Joe 3.’

Deadline is reporting that Chu and Paramount are finalizing a deal for him to direct the third ‘Joe’ movie, which comes after a bumpy ride for both on the second film. When Paramount moved ‘Retaliation’ from the summer of 2012 to March 28, 2013, it was rumored that it was because the movie was terrible, that it needed a lot of reshoots, and that the studio was post-converting it into 3D as a last ditch effort to make a few extra bucks. It’s the kind of bad buzz that could poison a film’s reception, regardless of the film’s actual quality.

But it turned out they didn’t reshoot much (if at all), and that Paramount saw that 3D action movies usually make more money internationally. The move turned out to be smart as ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ made over $120 million domestically and over $365 million worldwide. Paramount is currently in talks with writers for the follow-up, so the soonest we could expect to see ‘G.I. Joe 3′ is sometime in 2015.
