Floating the Alberton Gorge

Did you know that just a few miles west of Missoula sits a whitewater rafters dream? Yes, the Alberton Gorge is home to class II and class III rapids. This stretch of whitewater boasts five major rapids, and numerous smaller rapids. Not only is this a whitewater lover’s dream, it is just plain fun for anyone.

This past weekend my older boys, my husband and I took our raft down this famous stretch of water on the Clark Fork River. I have to admit that I was a bit nervous taking our boys down the gorge, but it was not nearly as scary, and way more fun, than I had anticipated.

I must tell you that my husband is an experienced rower, and has rowed this stretch of river before. I would not recommend it for an inexperienced rower because it does take some skill. Don’t worry if you don’t own your own raft, as there is a company who guides rafters down this beautiful and adventurous section of the Clark Fork.

Not only is the whitewater fantastic and fun, but the views are amazing too. On our float we saw two bald eagles and a golden eagle. In the calm water, we saw beautiful green pools that looked like they would be ripe for fishing. The entire stretch of water was littered with jagged rocks, cliffs and rock slides. It is the most gorgeous and fun stretch of the Clark Fork River that I have floated.

If you’re looking for something to do before the summer ends, floating the Alberton Gorge is a great way to spend a hot Montana summer day.
