Now that Fargo casting Ewan McGregor finally gave us a heading (or rather, double-heading) on Season 3, the third year of FX’s Minnesota murder yarn starts to take shape. To wit, showrunner Noah Hawley previews the “sibling rivalry” between Ewans, as well as a smaller character drama than Season 2, and some potential Solverson returns down the road.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Hawley suggested that the focus on McGregor’s disparate sibling characters would make Fargo Season 3 “not as big a story, character-wise, as the second year.” In particular, the Fargo showrunner suggested a past conflict would spiral out of control between the Stussy brothers:

There is an old wound between them that sort of gets reopened and re-litigated, and that rivalry becomes contentious and that sort of puts all the events in motion. The fun soup of it is you have to have enough moving parts that everything is on a collision course, but which parts are going to collide? There’s this element of randomness to it, which I think adds to the truthiness of our fake true story.

Previously, brothers Emmit and Ray Stussy were described thusly:

Emmit Stussy is the Parking Lot King of Minnesota. A handsome, self-made, real estate mogul and family man, Emmit sees himself as an American success story. His slightly younger brother, Ray Stussy, on the other hand is more of a cautionary tale. Balding, pot-bellied, Ray is the kind of guy who peaked in high school. Now a parole officer, Ray has a huge chip on his shoulder about the hand he’s been dealt, and he blames his brother, Emmit, for his misfortunes.

Hawley also teased that while the Solverson family of Season 1 (and technically 2) could put in appearances, none would have central roles:

I don’t know if we’re going to see any [of the Solversons]. We might drive by a couple on the road. What’s fun about the show is that it always connects in some way, either to the movie or to one of our other seasons and I like that those connections are sometimes very literal like with the backstory of Lou Solverson, and sometimes they’re more tangential.

Production likely set for November 2016, we know of Fargo Season 3 that the 2010 setting will enter “selfie-oriented culture,” and feature at least one returning character from either the 2006, or 1979 seasons. Hawley will at least remain at the reins, despite the Fargo showrunner’s increasingly busy FX schedule, while it remains unknown what Coen brothers influences can we expect this time around.

In the meantime, stay tuned for the latest on Fargo Season 3, as we learn who else might join the next round of Minnesota mayhem.
