To us, The Office is one of the best comedy series of all time. To David Brent, it’s a documentary about his life. One he seems weirdly proud of. Or at least not so ashamed of that he’s not willing to talk the directors again for a new documentary about his life as a struggling musician fronting the band Foregone Conclusion.

I’m not sure how to categorize David Brent: Life on the Road. Is it a sequel? A spinoff? Maybe both; it’s a film version of the U.K. TV series that made Ricky Gervais an international comedy star as Brent, the bumbling, awkward, and frequently incompetent manager of a paper sales office in England. Now Brent is back, just as awkward as ever, trying to make a go of a music career. It does not look to be going well.

Here’s the official synopsis:

David Brent: Life on the Road sees the highly anticipated big screen debut of one of comedy’s best-loved characters, David Brent (Ricky Gervais). The film catches up with Brent twelve years on from the BBC mockumentary The Office to find he is now a travelling salesman with Lavichem, a cleaning and ladies’ personal hygiene products company. However, he hasn’t given up on his dream of rock stardom and is about to embark on a self-financed UK tour with his band, ‘Foregone Conclusion’. Assembling a group of session musicians who are just in it for the money, and talented rapper Dom (Ben Bailey Smith) in an attempt to gain street cred, Brent cashes in his pensions and takes unpaid leave in a bid to turn his dream into reality. Get ready to join David Brent on the road as he takes one last shot at fame and fortune.

The trailer makes it look more than a little like This Is Spinal Tap, the film that practically invented the mockumentary genre that The Office helped popularize on television. That will be a tough film to top (and Life on the Road is also coming on the heels of the Lonely Island’s Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, another funny fake rock-doc in the Spinal Tap mold). But if anyone can do it, David Brent can. Or he can try, very unsuccessfully, but be hilarious in the process. The film opens in the U.K. on August 19 and, per Gervais, has been acquired by Netflix for U.S. distribution.
