The summer movie season keeps chugging right along. (Yes, we realize it isn't technically summer yet, but as far as movies are concerned, it is.) This weekend we get a dose of comedy and a dash of the spooks, so take your pick, moviegoers.
UPDATE Saturday 6:15 a.m. EST: The number of reported fatalities is at least five, with another 71 injuries caused by what authorities say are a total of 17 tornadoes ripping through the Midwest on Friday.
Wow. This is a monster weekend at the box office. While Memorial Day weekend is usually a good one for theaters, it's rare to see three heavyweights like these all hitting cinemas at the same time.
Most college athletes eat, sleep and breath their sport. They have worked hard to be able to compete in their sport at a college level, and many have received scholarships for their hard work and talent. Endless hours of training and practice consume a college athlete’s life. So, why would one such athlete give up his last chance to enjoy the sport he loves, and in his senior year no less? To save someone else’s life.
The second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing has been captured. Dzokhar Tsarnaev was taken into police custody Friday night -- five days after the bombing that left three dead and left more than 100 injured, police said. The 19-year-old was apprehended after a manhunt that began Thursday night with the fatal shooting of an MIT officer and extended into the evening hours on Friday.
Special Agent Rick DesLauriers of the FBI, who is leading the investigation of the Boston Marathon bombings, just held a press conference in which he revealed that there are two suspects. The FBI released photographs and video of two men believed to be responsible for the attacks.
2:45 p.m. (EST): The Boston Police Department has announced that "there has not been an arrest in the Marathon attack." Investigations are ongoing.
2:35 p.m.: CNN is retracting their previous report that an arrest has been made in the Boston Marathon bombings. Other sources are reporting that officials are close to identifying a suspect after reviewing area surveillance video, but no arrests have been made.
9 p.m. (EST): The final press conference of the day with Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis and various other officials just concluded. The FBI is now leading investigations of the events. Davis confirmed that three people were killed in today's blasts.
CNN is reporting that one of the victims killed was an 8-year-old boy. The Wall Street Journal had reported that as many as five other unexploded devices were found around Boston, but investigators now doubt that they were actually bombs.
I grew up in and around Seattle — when I wasn't growing up in Montana that is — and Seattle Mariners baseball was what spring was all about! As kids, we all used to pretend to be Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez and Randy Johnson as we played baseball with our friends. There was always someone in the back of the field who took on another familiar role though — that of commentator Davie Niehaus, i.e. the voice of the Mariners.
Niehaus died unexpectedly Nov. 10, 2010. In early April 2011, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis put together a moving, yet catchy, tribute to the man who apparently narrated the spring days of their childhood too.
The 2013 NCAA Championship concluded Monday night (April 8) with a 82-76 victory for the Louisville Cardinals over the Michigan Wolverines. The conclusion of the tournament, also meant the end of our 2013 NCAA Bracket Challenge.
Let's take a look at how our local bracket-predictors did...
Kevin Ware may have snapped his right tibia during Sunday's Midwest Regional final against Duke, but things have been going pretty well for the Louisville guard since then. The Cardinals beat Duke that night and earned a Final Four spot, and Ware says he's healing nicely and will get to play again.
