While the concept technically got its start on the Vaudevillian stage, the modern version of what we call a "girl group" in contemporary music stems from the '50s and '60s, when groups like the Shangri-Las, the Chantels and the Supremes ruled the airwaves with their sweet harmonies and beehive hair.

The next few decades ushered in a time for rock bands (like the Runaways and the Bangles) and solo pop stars, but a considerable resurgence in girl group power struck like lightning in the '90s, with acts like Destiny's Child, TLC and the Spice Girls shaking (and spicing) the charts up with massive hits.

As we moved into the 2000s, the light of the pop girl group seemed to flicker: For a while they seemed out of vogue, but then ensembles like the Pussycat Dolls and Girls Aloud broke through with incredible success.

Today, it's safe to say that girl groups aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Acts like Little Mix, Fifth Harmony, AKB48 and Girls' Generation continue to dominate worldwide, and a wave of nostalgia has everyone wondering if the Spice Girls will finally reunite? (They will! Well, sorta.)

But who of these top sisterly pop princesses reign supreme as ultimate girl group queens? Vote below for which act you think should be crowned the best girl group of all time! But hurry — the polls closes at midnight on July 16.
