Here’s That New Comic-Con 2016 Poster for ‘Doctor Strange’
Headed to Comic-Con International this month? Be sure to keep your eyes open: Entertainment Weekly reports that copies this new Doctor Strange poster will be distributed at the convention, which runs from July 21–24. This may not be the announcement of a Doctor Strange panel that a lot of fans are still hoping for, but as far as consolation prizes go, it’s pretty darn acceptable.
Darth Vader to Star in a Canonical Virtual Reality Story
With Disney throwing a massive amount of resources behind their new Star Wars property, one of the more interesting things to come out of Star Wars Celebration was the news that Luscasfilm would not shy away from using emerging technologies like virtual reality to tell Star Wars stories. Case in point? A brand new Darth Vader virtual reality experience, which the folks at Entertainment Weekly have written up alongside quotes from the producers and crew.
‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ Will Pick Up Right Where ‘The Force Awakens’ Left Off
Remember those dramatic last minutes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens? Rey landing on a distant planet. A robed figure pulls back his hood to reveal an anguished Luke Skywalker. Rey reaches out, lightsaber in hand, as the camera pulls back and a familiar fanfare starts to play

‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ Spoiler: Carrie Fisher On What We Might Not See
The death of Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens came as a pretty big shock for die-hard Star Wars fans (unless you’re like me and had it spoiled by the random eight-year-old sitting next to you moments before the movie started). And since we barely had a chance to catch our breath before the film moved into the final climactic duel between Kylo Ren and Rey, you can be forgiven for hoping that the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII would circle back to the death of Han Solo and take a few minutes to send the character off right. You know, give us a little closure.
StudioCanal Pulls Idris Elba Thriller ‘Bastille Day’ From French Theaters
With Idris Elba at the epicenter of Bond rumors and The Dark Tower production gossip, more than a few of us have kept our eye on the reviews of Bastille Day, a new thriller starring Elba as a CIA agent and former Game of Thrones star Richard Madden as a pickpocket caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Even if the reviews of the film have been mostly average, it did offer us a valuable look at Elba as both an international spy and a modern gunslinger, something we hope to see a lot more of soon.
New ‘Star Trek Beyond’ Clips: Scotty Meets Jaylah and Shields Up!
Good news for Star Trek fans: not only have the early reviews of the film been pretty positive, the last few days saw two final Star Trek Beyond clips hit the internet for those looking to dig a little bit deeper into the movie. So all those coworkers of mine who keep asking me, since I’m a film critic, if they should be worried about the lack of Star Trek Beyond coverage, relax! Things are looking pretty good.
Criterion’s October Slate Is a Love Letter to Guillermo del Toro
There are few things more enjoyable as a cinephile than watching a movie from the Criterion Collection or listening to director Guillermo del Toro talk about art history and his favorite genre films. So with this week’s announcement that the Criterion Collection would be going very heavy on the del Toro films in their October lineup, we may actually be in danger of suffering too much of a good thing. We didn’t know that was possible, either.
‘Taken’ Director to Take On Serial Killer Thriller ‘Big Stone Grid’
In a particularly strong year for horror movies, one of the lesser-known titles of 2015 has to be Bone Tomahawk, the debut film by writer-director S. Craig Zahler. It wasn’t just the horror fans that appreciated its slow pacing and bursts of graphic violence; I attended a signature screening at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and sat next to a pair of elderly women who laughed uproariously at the funny parts and powered through the gore. Certainly, it was a film that made S. Craig Zahler a name to remember.
Kristen Stewart Has a Fun Idea for a Female James Bond Movie
By now, you probably have a preferred actor in mind for James Bond. Maybe it’s Idris Elba. Maybe it’s Tom Hiddleston. Maybe it’s Gillian Anderson. You could probably make a compelling argument for or against every actor currently working today; regardless, it’s fun to watch both fans and actors alike cast a pretty wide net for the role. The fact that nothing is off the table this time around can only mean good things for the future of the franchis
‘The Mummy’ Set Photos Show Off Sofia Boutella’s Monster
Listen, I won’t pretend to know whether I’m supposed to be excited about the new Universal Studios monster movies or not. Like most of you, I do get a little bit of a headache every time a studio boss utters the words “shared universe,” but no matter how cynicism I try and muster for the new Tom Cruise remake of The Mummy, I just can’t. It has Tom Cruise! Running around London! Fighting a gosh-darn mummy! Yeah, that’s right, I’m an easy mark.
‘Goat’ Trailer: Nick Jonas and College Hazing Gone Wrong
We make fun of James Franco an awful lot on the internet — remember his short-lived flirtation with a Blood Meridian adaptation before it turned out he never had the rights to the movie? — but credit where it is due: Franco isn’t afraid to lend his celebrity to some pretty challenging subject matter. And after checking out the first trailer for Goat, I think it’s safe to say that Franco’s work as both actor and producer were well-placed on this one.
Mel Gibson Shoots Everyone but His Daughter in ‘Blood Father’ Trailer
Mel Gibson has spent the majority of his career playing variations of the same slightly unhinged character, so it was probably inevitable — even despite his well-deserved years in the Hollywood penalty box — that some producer would find occasion to cast him as a slightly unhinged dad. The new trailer for Blood Father shows Gibson ranting and raving as per usual, only this time he has an estranged daughter on the run to protect and a survivalist beard. The latter certainly seems like an upgrade.
