Matthew McConaughey to teach University Film Class
Remember those days in high school where your regular history teacher would call in sick and some anonymous substitute would just put on a VHS of Glory or Gettysburg and call it a day? It turns out that practice is still alive and well at universities across the country, with one small difference: instead of some random recent college graduate as a substitute teacher, these students will be visited by Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey.
Ben Wheatley Is the Latest Director to Shoot a Radiohead Video
As part of their release strategy for their newest album, Radiohead has targeted some of the most influential modern filmmakers to shoot music videos or short vignettes for their songs. The biggest of these was undoubtedly Paul Thomas Anderson, whose “Daydreaming” video was released back in May and even played prior to movies at several arthouse theaters across the countries. And now, Radiohead has added British filmmaker Ben Wheatley to the fold with a short vignette for their song “Ful Stop”.
J.K. Rowling has Already Written a ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Sequel
One of the major truths of the entertainment industry is that there will never be a more interesting movie than the one you haven’t yet made. This weekend, while The Legend of Tarzan director David Yates was gently trying to nudge conversations towards his film currently in theaters, people were understandably curious about his upcoming return to Hogwarts, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. And Yates let a particularly interesting piece of information drop.
Pixar Has No More Sequels Planned After ‘The Incredibles 2’
With Finding Dory breaking all kinds of box office records, fans are understandably excited to see which of their favorite franchises Pixar will bring back to multiplexes. And the answer is, it kind of depends. If you’re a fan of Cars, Toy Story, and The Incredibles, you’ll be able to revisit your favorite Pixar characters no later than 2019. And if you’re a fan of Wall-E, Ratatouille, or Inside Out... well, we hope you’re OK with waiting for the next decade or so.
Aaron Sorkin to Teach Online Screenwriting MasterClass
Aaron Sorkin has always been a bit ahead of the game. Back in the days when television was still considered a place for actors to go when their film career had dried up, Sorkin proved himself to be medium agnostic, moving between film (A Few Good Men, The American President) and television (Sports Night, The West Wing) without any drop in quality or prestige. So it shouldn’t be too surprising that Sorkin is once again looking at an emerging format, this time the virtual classroom, to share some of the things he has learned over his career.
Terrence Malick to Shoot World War II Drama ‘Radegund’
When it comes to both longevity and infrequency of output, few directors can match Terrence Malick. The American filmmaker has been directing films since 1969 and has only just broken into double digits, with two films still in the final stages of production. That being said, Malick may be getting faster with age. With the news that Malick has a new film in the works, this will mean that Malick has finished more movies in the last five years than he did in his first 40.
George Lucas Won’t Be Building a Museum in Chicago After All
Bad news for Star Wars enthusiasts in Chicago: after several legal setbacks, George Lucas has decided not to move forward with his plans for a lakeside museum. According to Variety, the decision was made after it appeared that the lawsuit filed by Chicago group Friends of Parks was not going to be resolved anytime soon.
The Rock Cooks Up a Trailer For His YouTube Channel
Not content to dominate the world through both Instagram and Twitter (and movies and television shows and wrestling guest appearances and talk show appearances and pretty much everything else), Dwayne Johnson has announced plans to launch his own YouTube channel on July 18 of this year. If the above video is to be believed, Johnson’s inner monologue is also the staging ground of an epic YA adventure movie. Sounds good to us.
Kellan Lutz Could Be He-Man in McG’s ‘Masters of the Universe’
If you did not know that Sony Pictures is working towards the production of a brand new He-Man movie, then you obviously are not one of the 462 supporters of the Change.org petition to have a new Masters of the Universe movie be put into production. The petition also (very helpfully) provides a suggested release date of 2017 or 2018, though I’m sure that the audience would gladly push that back for the right story.
Roland Emmerich is Already Talking About ‘Independence Day 3’
The box office results for Independence Day: Resurgence may not be in yet, but that hasn’t prevented director Roland Emmerich from talking sequels. According to a recent interview with Empire (via /Film), Emmerich has plans to send Earth’s most Goldblum-y defenders out among the stars.
Rumor: Fox and Marvel Are Getting Friendly
While reviews for Captain America: Civil War were not quite as unanimous as past entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was one thing we could all agree on: Sony Pictures was very, very smart to let Marvel take a crack at shaping the next series of Spider-Man movies.
Michael Sheen to Tackle True Crime ‘Green River Killer’
With the popularity of Netflix’s Making a Murderer and NPR’s Serial, the true crime genre has never been bigger. Yesterday, Variety announced that actor and screenwriter Michael Sheen would be throwing his hat into the ring with Green River Killer, an adaptation of the infamous 20-year investigation into a series of murders in the state of Washington.
