John Krasinski in Talks to Join J.J. Abrams Produced ‘God Particle’
For an actor, the tough thing about becoming famous for playing a single character for nearly a decade on a long-running TV show is that you eventually become identified with that persona, rather than as yourself. So, for instance, if you’re John Krasinski and have made a name for yourself by consistently portraying an aloof but lovable slacker with a penchant for breaking the fourth wall on a pop
Animated Scooby-Doo Reboot ‘S.C.O.O.B.’ to Launch Hanna-Barbera Cinematic Universe
Remember the late ’90s? Remember the dot-com bubble, when this exciting newfangled invention called “the Inter-net” was going to make us all richer than god and jet-propel the American economy into the future? Wall Streeters started buying up highly speculative tech stocks like crazy, and when it came time for the invested companies to deliver the goods, many failed completely and the business wen
‘The Phantom Menace’ Star Jake Lloyd Admitted to Psychiatric Facility Following Arrest Last Year
Revisiting Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, it’s easy to hate li’l Annie Skywalker, the hero-to-be of the film. He says a lot of dumb stuff, mostly about sand, or angels, or whether or not this is podracing. (To clarify: it is, indeed, podracing...
Tracy Morgan May Star Opposite Ed Helms and Amanda Seyfried in ‘The Clapper’
It hasn’t been two years since the six-car collision that threw Tracy Morgan’s whole future into question, but the actor has already begun his comeback. He appeared in the Christmas comedy The Night Before back in the winter as the omniscient narrator, and will soon appear in the ensemble comedy Fist Fight with Charlie Day, Christina Hendricks, and Ice Cube...
Is This Rick Ross, Skrillex Track the Official ‘Suicide Squad’ Theme Song?
This past weekend, some brave soul with the wherewithal to actually attend a Skrillex DJ set at Atlantic City‘s Wav Nightclub shot a brief video of the celebrity EDM icon spinning an unreleased track featuring hip-hop heavyweight Rick Ross...
Will Ferrell to Return to the North Pole For His Next Comedy
Get a few drinks in a group of guy-pals, and antics inevitably arise: doing donuts in an abandoned parking lot, maybe hitting a strip club, the odd snowmobile expedition to the North Pole — you know, guy stuff. That last one actually happened to a group of foolhardy drinking buddies in 1968 Minnesota, too, and now Deadline reports that Will Ferrell and Sony have set about recreating the epic journ
Familiar Faces Return in New ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ TV Spot
Why do audiences turn out in droves for epically proportioned blockbusters every summer? Is it for the ten-stories-tall feeling of spectacle, that rush of pure cinematic thrill that every cinephile spends their whole life chasing? To escape the mundanities of everyday life and turn to a plane where all is entertaining, orderly, rational, and tightly edited...
Daniel Radcliffe’s Dead-ish Body Saves the Day in Bizarre ‘Swiss Army Man’ Trailer
Among the hottest topics of conversation at Sundance back in January was a picture by the name of Swiss Army Man, or as it was commonly referred to, “the farting corpse movie.” Described by Variety as “Cast Away meets Weekend at Bernie’s as directed my Michel Gondry,” the singularly weird picture casts Paul Dano as Hank, a man marooned on a desert island who has officially exhausted all his option
After More Than a Decade, Terry Gilliam‘s ‘Don Quixote’ Is Back on Track
After 17 years spent milling around development hell, Terry Gilliam’s adaptation of Don Quixote ranks among the greatest films never made. The celebrated director of such wild-eyed satires as Brazil and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas took on a mad mission of his own in tackling the legendary picaresque novel from Miguel Cervantes, landing Johnny Depp and Jean Rochefort to star in the tale of a deluded knight pursuing farcical missions around the Spanish countryside while providing subtle critiques of class and religion. The 2002 documentary Lost in La Mancha chronicles Gilliam’s long and arduous road to realizing this vision, which included everything from flash floods to technical hassles to a serious illness from Rochefort that would ultimately table the entire production and result in a $15 million insurance claim.
Kristen Wiig Replaces Reese Witherspoon in Alexander Payne’s ‘Downsizing’
Alexander Payne has traded muses, with his one-time Election star Reese Witherspoon stepping out of his developing project titled Downsizing to go pursue work elsewhere. (There’s no bad blood between the former collaborators, according to Deadline, the break was purely a matter of scheduling complications.) For her replacement, Payne went in a bit of a different direction. Though she does not share Witherspoon’s good-ol’-southern-gal charm or the combination of slight-statured cuteness and raw determination that made Election such a treat, SNL-alum-turned-movie-star Kristen Wiig will make for a perfect addition to the Payneverse. Payne’s last film, the tone-perfect small-town satire Nebraska, tapped Will Forte — another SNL vet — for a rare dramatic role and reaped massive dividends. Hopefully, he’ll be able to pull off the same feat with Wiig.
Kevin James to Suit Up for Inspirational Football Movie ‘44’
A firm believer that it’s never too late to teach an old dog some new tricks, a 44-year-old Tennessee man named Joey Williams returned to college in 2003 to complete the degree he never finished. While enrolled at Jackson, Tennessee’s own Lambuth University, he decided to get the full collegiate experience by joining the football team as a lineman and playing alongside the young bucks — one of whom, in a stranger-than-fiction twist, just so happened to be Williams’ son. Fulfilling a lifelong dream of playing college ball that was once stymied by a busted knee in his senior year of high school, Williams provided NPR with an inspirational human-interest story for their segment “A Lineman At 44.”
Netflix Joins Pushback Against Anti-LGBT Legislation in Georgia
Up until very recently, Georgia was a haven for film productions, the rolling amber waves of generous tax breaks beckoning to crews from Hollywood to New York. That all changed when the Georgia state legislature moved to pass a new bill that harshly restricts the rights of LGBT individuals under the guise of religious freedom. The Free Exercise Protection Act grants any religious official the option to refuse to officiate a non-hetero couple’s wedding, and permits any employer to discriminate in hiring and service practices on the basis of sexual orientation, all under the rationale that being forced to interact with queer men and women in any capacity would violate their religious freedom. Such giants of the entertainment industry as Disney/Marvel, Warner Bros., AMC, Viacom and Sony have all urged a veto to the bill, with the threat of withdrawing all operations from Georgia looming over the legislators.
