Album of the Year – 2014 PopCrush Fan Choice Awards
The 2014 PopCrush Fan Choice Awards are here, where we look back at the best that pop culture had to offer this past year and give you the chance to vote for your favorites in a host of different categories. Here, we're taking a look at Album of the Year. There were a ton of awesome records to choose from!
Possibly the most-hyped album of 2013 was 'Bangerz' by Miley Cyrus, what with her twerking, her nudity, her grills, her public pot smoking. Far less controversial (but still awesome) were the albums released by fellow Disney alums, such as 'Stars Dance' by Selena Gomez and 'Demi' by Demi Lovato. Each boasted huge singles like 'Come & Get It,' 'Slow Down,' 'Heart Attack' and 'Neon Lights,' but none garnered the hype that Cyrus and her ever-present tongue did.
Fellow pop tart Katy Perry released 'Prism' with a lot of promo and a killer lead single in 'ROAR,' though follow-up 'Unconditionally' didn't make as much of an impact. Lady Gaga hyped up 'ARTPOP' majorly, though it failed to chart as well as 'Born This Way' or 'The Fame,' but there's still time depending on her single choices!
Ariana Grande relied almost solely on her powerhouse pipes to promote 'Yours Truly,' featuring Mariah Carey-style tracks like 'The Way' and power ballad 'Tattooed Heart.' Lorde went the anti-establishment route with 'Pure Heroine,' which ironically placed her at the top of the charts.
Perhaps pulling the dark horse is Charli XCX, whose 'True Romance' influenced, well, 'Dark Horse' singer Perry herself!
But the category isn't an all-girl affair, either. The boys delivered big this year: One Direction broke records with 'Midnight Memories,' their more mature third offering, while fellow boy band and onetime touring partner Big Time Rush served the ultra-catchy '24-Seven' and 1D rivals the Wanted grew up a bit on 'Word of Mouth.'
Former boy bander Justin Timberlake proved why he's a pop Renaissance man on 'The 20/20 Experience Part I,' which boasted huge hits like 'Suit & Tie' and the smash 'Mirrors.' Eminem, who may be the very antithesis of all the acts listed, had one of the highest anticipated releases of 2013 with 'The Marshall Mathers LP 2,' regarded as a return to his original witty, word-playing flow.
And then there's Beyonce's secret self-titled record, which shattered records, debuted at No. 1 and places her in a class all her own. They don't call her Queen Bey for nothing!
